And it was Mary who suggested to me that most new members are interested not only in information about their ancestry, but also would like to contact cousins who share their interests. Thanks, Mary, for your years of fine service to our family association. Mary was a long time dedicated DDFA member, Board member coordination of the first DDFA Missouri Reunions.

Willmore (Will) Mastin Dameron III,
No photo description available.
lifelong salesperson and volunteer, died Monday, June 20, 2022, at his home in Glen Allen, Virginia. He was 82 years old. Someone who never met a stranger as he could strike up a conversation anywhere and anytime, Will was born in 1939 in Charlottesville, to parents Willmore and Hazel Dameron. His childhood days were spent playing in the country near the river house where he grew up in the Northern Neck with his two brothers, Charles and Jimmy who preceded him. While studying at Virginia Commonwealth University, he met his future wife Susan Dameron and married in 1963. Will started his sales career going door-to-door selling Wear Ever cookware, before landing in insurance with Woodmen of the World. He continued his passion for meeting people and love of driving across the state after retiring by helping people enroll in Medicare insurance supplements. It was during his stint with Woodmen that his volunteer time was devoted to summer camps. Will loved genealogy and family reunions, devoting much attention to the Dameron-Damron Family Association. Will is survived by loving wife, Susan, and his children Willmore Mastin Dameron IV and Deanna Weiss as well as their spouses Laurie Dameron and Val Weiss. His son Will introduced him to hunting, and both shared their love of fishing on the Great Wicomico River and the Chesapeake Bay. Five grandchildren were his pride: Tino Weiss, Chris Weiss, Spencer Weiss, Madison Dameron, and Ryan Dameron. He was thrilled to see their college and high school graduations, a new generation of hunters and fishers, and the wedding of Tino to Jessica Weiss.

In place of flowers, the family requests donations be made to maintain the Mila Community Cemetery c/o E.A. Sisson, 86 Salt Water Ln, Heathsville VA 22473.
Visitation and services were held at the Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock, Virginia, on June 26th, 2022 at 3:00 PM. The graveside service followed at Mila Community Cemetery. Willmore, brother to Rev Charles Dameron served on the DDFA Board and hosted the DDFA reunions from 2014-2022. He did a wonderful job and we will miss his jokes and laughter.

77, born on July 25, 1943, in Charlottesville, Va., was peacefully called home to the Lord on June 22, 2021. A lifelong servant of God, he was predeceased by his parents, Wilmore M. Jr. and Hazel J. Dameron; and brother, James Dameron. Charles graduated from Northumberland High School, RPI (now VCU) and Eastern Mennonite Seminary with his Master of Divinity. He received a strong calling from the Lord that led to his career change from business to ordained elder with the United Methodist Church. He faithfully served numerous churches in Virginia – Hawkinstown, Mt. Clifton, Mt. Hermon, and Otterbein Chapel UMCs (1976) on the Harrisonburg District; Irvington and White Marsh UMCs (1981), Emmanuel and Grace Providence UMCs (1993), and Andrew Chapel and Edgewater UMCs (2000) on the Rappahannock District; and Wesley Chapel (1985) and Somerton and Whaleyville UMCs (1988) on the Portsmouth District. Charles is remembered for his inspired sermons, his caring visitation to those in need, his special calling to small membership churches and his fun-loving sense of humor. He retired in 2004 and went on to serve as Pastor Emeritus at Irvington UMC. He performed countless baptisms, weddings and funerals over his career – saving every news clipping and thank you note – and continued preaching and serving in his retirement when called upon, including at Kilmarnock UMC and his childhood church home, Mila UMC. Charles – Dad, Grandpa, Granddad – is survived by his devoted wife, Sue, who stayed by his side and cared for him throughout his battle with cancer; his two loving daughters and their husbands, Stephanie and John Clark and Shari and Russ Laraway; his four grandchildren, Matthew, Kendall, Russell and Hudson; his brother, Willmore Dameron III (Susan) and family; numerous other relatives and friends; and, of course, his precious cat, Sophie. He was a dedicated husband, father and friend. Charles lived a life of public service, serving in leadership positions over the years with multiple PTAs and the Ruritans; as first chair of the Suffolk Meals on Wheels and board member/treasurer of the Northern Neck-Middlesex Free Health Clinic; in numerous other community activities; and quietly serving behind the scenes, helping so many along with his wife, Sue. In lieu of flowers, his family asks you to make a donation to your favorite charity in memory of Charles’ dedication to serving. The love and kindness of all have been so appreciated by his family. Funeral services will be held 11 a. m. Saturday, June 26, 2021 at Irvington United Methodist Church, Irvington, Va. Rev Charles, brother to Willmore Dameron, was our DDFA’s Honorary Chaplain, joining us for reunions and delivering the blessing. He performed the dedication of the Lawrence Dameron and Family Monument erected in the Dameron/Harding Cemetery at the entrance to The Dameron Marsh, 2009. He was a blessing to us all.

Charles Claude Chaney 1940-2024, Charles Claude Chaney of Westlake, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, October 9th, 2024.
Charles, whom his family and friends affectionately knew as “Choppy,” was born to the late Claude and Maude Alice Ruth (“Maudie Ruth”) Chaney (née Canady) in Central Texas on July 4th, 1940.
Charles spent his youth in rural Belton, Texas, and attended Belton High School, Class of 1958. In 1963, Charles graduated from East Texas State University (now known as East Texas A&M University) in Commerce, Texas, with a BSA in Commercial Art and Communications.
Following college, he served as an officer in the United States Air Forces, serving at Medina AFB (now part of Lackland AFB) in San Antonio, Texas, and (the now decommissioned) Chanute AFB in Rantoul, Illinois.
In October 1972, Charles moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he worked as a librarian for the Cleveland Public Library until his retirement in November 1998. Charles was a man of many interests, including genealogy, classic cinema, British television programs, and bringing new life to historical and family photographs through digital colorization.
An accomplished carpenter, Charles enjoyed woodworking even after he downsized from his house to his condo.
Charles was an early adopter of home computers, starting as early as 1981, and truly embraced the technology. He was also a videophile who appreciated having the latest in television and video tech. Charles discovered and connected many distantly related relatives from throughout the country and assisted friends in doing the same.
High among his pursuits was his genealogy, having joined the DDFA in the late 1980’s and served as Editor for the DDFA newsletter and then DDFA President. At the time of his death, he was still involved in Dameron-Damron research and was advisor to the DDFA Board. Charles attended many of our DDFA reunions with his computer in hand. When Charles health started to fail, he attended our reunions with the help of one of his best friends, Jim. Jim passed away several years ago leaving Charles without transportation to reunions. We missed Charles attending our reunions but kept him updated.
Those who knew Charles will deeply miss him, his humor, and his friendship. He was a man of kindness, generosity, and warmth. Though sad that he is gone, we were blessed that we had the pleasure of knowing him in this lifetime. Charles served as a DDFA Board member, Secretary, Treasurer, Editor, President and then advisor to the board. He will be missed by all who were honored to know him.

Albert was a longtime and dedicated member of the DDFA with a passion for research.  In 1990 Albert  (San Antonio, Texas)  generously donated a photocopy of Helen Foster Snow’s, The Dameron-Damron Genealogy to our Dameron-Damron Family Association.  His Snow book, purchased from Mrs. Snow in about 1977, includes her information about the Damrons of Kentucky and West Virginia.  It does not include all of the information about the descendants of John Damron and Anna Ladd or all of the information about Damerons in North Carolina that appeared in other versions of her book. As always there are errors, but her book should be used as a guide to further research, it is very useful, but every effort should be made to substantiate information from the book in actual records. Thank you Albert.

Dearest Mary,
Don’t think of them as gone away, their  journey’s just begun
life holds so many facets, this earth is only one.
Just think of them as resting, from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort, where there are no days and years.
Think how they must be wishing that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness, can really pass away.
And think of them as living, in the hearts of those they touched…
for nothing loved is ever lost and they were loved so much.     Cindora

Ned Dameron (born Edward Palfrey IV on May 7, 1943)
is a native of Louisiana who turned to painting after studying sculpture and figurative realism with major artists at Tulane’s Newcomb School of Art. Dameron’s mother had an art gallery in New Orleans, and dealt in contemporary European paintings – many of which were of the fantastic school; this gave him the idea for painting in a similar vein. After graduation, 1970 he worked for an advertising agency then turned to easel paintings for local galleries, and freelance illustration painting under the name “Arthur Amber”. He lived and painted in San Francisco 1977-1979, and was influenced by the then emerging style sometimes called “California Visionary”. He returned to Louisiana, and since the 1980s has exhibited his personal works, while taking freelance assignments in the SF/F genre. Through the 1980s and into the 1990s, Dameron’s mix of romanticized architectural backgrounds, old-world style, and colorful palette were a good match to the sorts of literary projects undertaken by specialty house publishers, especially the fully illustrated high quality hard-cover book, published in limited quantities for collectors. Almost all his commissions during that time came from two publishers, Donald M. Grant and Underwood-Miller. For their books he produced cover art and many full color plates and black-and-white drawings for interior illustrations, numbering in the dozens for each book – most of which have long been sold. In the mid 1990s Dameron moved into gaming, finding the same opportunity there to build a freelance relationship with one major client (TSR

April 18, 1938 to March 5, 2021 Betty Lorraine Damron was born April 18, 1938 in Portland Oregon to James Kendall and Gertrude Alma Damron.  She lived there until she was six, when the family moved to Beaverton onto a small farm, graduating from Beaverton High School in 1956.  Her father worked for the Post Office and started the very first rural mail route in Aloha just west of Beaverton.  Because of an accident her father retired early, and the family moved back to Portland in 1957 where Betty worked at their trailer park and laundromat.  At 20 months old Betty met her husband Don Nees, when he was born and came home from the hospital, January 1940.  Interestingly, the Damron and Nees families knew each other well.  Both sets of parents knew each other before the parents were married.  In 1959, on her 21st birthday Don called her for a date to a concert.  She immediately said, “Yes I’ll go with you.”  The date went with a chocolate milk shake with two straws.  Betty and Don Nees were married on June 3, 1961, and Don graduated 2 days later from Oregon State.  Betty liked to travel and with her input Don took a travelling job with the Federal Aviation Administration for three years.  When family came along, they moved to Bremerton, Washington in Navy country, where Don worked for the Navy.  Don was able to retire early in 1993, Betty agreed.

A full-time hobby starts. Betty’s Father James Kendall and Uncle Charles Damron had been contacted by the DDFA back when it started.  Thank you DDFA for all your hard work through the years. Thinking about her Damron roots, Betty asked for these letters from Uncle Chuck.  Betty fell in love with genealogy, and along with Don they worked together.  She said many times that finding living relatives was the real purpose, and she found many.  Betty was an expert organizer, she has a tall double bookshelf in the den with six shelves full of family notebooks—all kind of documents, photos, and maps.  It was her personally made library, and a collection of numerous stories.  She helped a 4th cousin write on her Grandmother Damron’s side, starting with Edmond Pearson an Episcopal Methodist circuit- rider in Tennessee, and down into Georgia and Alabama.  His sons were almost all ministers including Grandma Damron’s father.  Betty helped Barbara Low Driscoll write on the Low side which tied into George Damron and Brother James Lewis Damron who both married Low sisters.  Barbara had already contacted family and established the George Damron side.  Betty and Don travelled following their roots.  The DDFA had census and data files, Betty got them; Charles Chaney correctly pointed her to Hardeman County, TN.  She started and actively wrote Damron stories, Don assisting with five stories being published in the DDFA Newsletter at the time of her passing.  Shortly after, the 40th Anniversary Edition Newsletter had her 6th story. The past few years slowed her down.  Her love poured out onto grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Betty and Don had been married three months shy of 60 years at the time of her death.  She is also survived by Son Gary, and Daughter Donna Schmahl; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Betty and Don were long time members of the DDFA and a great contributor to the DDFA Newsletters. We will miss her articles.

Charles Graten Damron Jr.,
Those of us who attended the various Dameron-Damron Family Associations reunions and gatherings knew Charles Damron. He and Della would to be present at each gathering. They were a constant. Della may have performed much of the genealogical research but Charles was very much an interested presence with a twinkle in his eye and a fount of stories. His sense of humor permeated most of these stories, enriching them and providing the texture that made them special. I never knew him well since I saw him only at the reunions, but, he and Della, I could rarely think of one without the other, became a part of my sense of Damron family. Written by Charles C Chaney

1917-2005
Just as this issue of the newsletter was being completed, word was received that Ann Cash Damron had died in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Born Lydia Ann Damron on March 15, 1917 in Ralls Texas to James Henry Damron and Edna  Marie Cash. Her husband, Frank Etiers Warwick  predeceased her in 1997. Children: Bernard Etier and Jerald Lynn Warwick. Ann (as we knew her) died February 6, 2005.
She was a well-known artist of the Southwest. Born and raised in west Texas on a farm and ranch, she won her first award for her art, in Lubbock, Texas, at the age of twelve years. She has had many one-man art exhibitions, been part of a three man exhibit in New York City, and many other showings with artist associations. Ann attended Dameron-Damron Family Association reunions in Missouri and was at the gathering at Cabwaylingo State Forest, West Virginia, in 2003.
I had the privilege of meeting and spending time with Ann when she joined us at our Cabwaylingo Reunion. She was visiting West Virginia (Cabwaylingo reunion) and then headed to North Carolina and then home. Her goal was to visit all 50 states, and she did. I was saddened to learn of her death. She was such a sweet gentle soul. Cindora
COAT OF ARMS ON DISPLAY
Ann Damron, a professional artist from New Mexico, has put her talents to work on the Damerin coat of arms that we Damerons and Damrons like to claim as our own. At the St. Joseph reunion she displayed several hand-painted coats of arms which could be framed and displayed on the walls of Dameron or Damron homes or offices.
THE SQUAW GALLERY, ARTIST ANN DAMRON, 1984
Miss Ann Damron, well known artist of this Southwestern area, is fast gaining a national reputation as an artist in several types of paintings. Much of her work is her own technique even though she has studied under twelve or more famous instructors from all over this United States. Landscapes are the artistes first love, however, she also does seascapes, still life, portraits and Western scenes. Most of her paintings are done in New Mexico where she has lived for many years, and in Texas, Colorado, Arizona, and California. The artist was born and reared on a farm and ranch in West Texas, winning her first award for art in Lubbock, Texas, when she was 12 years of age. She admits that painting has been a long hard struggle through the years. Miss Damron has had 20 or more one-man art exhibits, a three-man exhibit in New York and many other showings with artist associations. At present, her paintings hang in galleries in Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Taos, office of the Secretary of State at Santa Fe, Fort Worth, Texas. The artist has toured 20 countries enjoying the famous art galleries. She is inspired by her one a year “sketching trips,” into the countryside to study nature at first hand not only here, but also in other countries

Harry Vigor Marcum

1935 – 2017
Harry V. Marcum, 82, of Westwood, died Friday, June 2nd, at Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility under Hospice Care. Harry was the son of the late Martin and Alma Townsend Marcum. He was born April 16, 1935 in Ashland, Kentucky. He was a retired maintenance operator in the hospital industry and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Harry never met a stranger and his passion was working on family genealogy. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his brother, George Marcum, Sisters, Winnie Hurn, Mary Jane Terrell, Ethel Marcum, Thelma Enkie, Rachel Wilkins, and Carolyn Rice. Funeral Services will be Friday, June 9th, at 1:00 PM at Preston Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be Friday from Noon until service time. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Burial Park.
Harry was the top genealogy researcher for the Marcum’s. He helped so many in their research over the years. If you have any Marcum connections Harry was probably the one that helped you. He spent countless hours researching and helped with Dameron Damrons/Marcum connections as well. His favorites were the microfilm and microfish readers where he would sit for hours at his local Ashland, Boyd County,  Kentucky Library. In front of the Boyd County Library you will find an inlaid brick with his name on it at the front door and probably a chair in the genealogy department with his name on it. Genealogy Societies and Libraries knew him on a first name basis. He is missed by so many.
